Today: Turkish-American “relations” or “contradictions”?

Сегодня: турецко-американские «отношения» или «противоречия»?

Relations between Turkey and the United States deteriorated rapidly during the last years. Today, perhaps, they are characterized more by the presence of “contradictions” than the former “allied relations.”

Recall that “relations” between the two countries largely based on Alliance in NATO. Turkey joined the Alliance in 1952. Initially, both the American and European public was skeptical about the idea of a military Alliance with Ankara. However, us President Harry Truman was able to lobby for this decision, fearing that Turkey would fall under Soviet influence.

This is Ankara’s rapprochement with its Northern neighbor had already seen as the key dangers for Washington, especially given that Turkey controls strategically important for NATO and the United States, the Bosporus and the Dardanelles.

At that time an important indication of the willingness of Ankara to become a member of the Alliance was the participation of Turkey in the Korean war on the side of the United States, where it sent several thousand of their troops. As Turkey’s readiness to become, on orders from Washington, “Outpost” against the Soviet Union during the cold war.

But times change, and international realities. There is only resentment and anti-American sentiments in Turkish society today where many residents are angered by the military presence and the dictates of the US on the ground Turkey. As noted in March, Turkish President Erdogan, “this discontent has increased on the background of the controversies of the past two years, arose between the two countries”.

And in may of this year, Turkish foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stressed that Turkish people are demanding from authorities to close to use the Americans a military base in Incirlik, noting that last year the base has left the air forces of Germany due to serious political differences between Ankara and Berlin.

A significant deepening “misunderstandings” with the United States was the refusal of Turkey to purchase anti-aircraft missile complex “Patriot” and deal with Russia on the purchase of the system s-400.

In August, Turkish President Erdogan via the American media turned to the history of Turkish-American relations. Special attention the politician drew on two episodes in Turkish-American relations, Recalling that for many years Turkey was in a hurry to help America, when it was necessary.

However, the United States has repeatedly and consistently shown a lack of respect and lack of understanding of the concerns of the Turkish people. In recent years this partnership was tested for strength differences. Unfortunately, the Turkish effort to reverse this dangerous trend was in vain.

In confirmation of Erdogan reminded, on 15 July 2016 Turkey were attacked by members of the informal group, headed by Fethullah gülen, who from the complex in a rural area of Pennsylvania directs his organization, formally known as the Turkish government as a Terrorist organization, Fethullah. The Turkish people expect that the United States unreservedly condemn the attack and Express solidarity with the elected leadership of Turkey. However, it was not so. The reaction of the United States was far from satisfactory.

In addition, the Turkish side was disappointed by the cooperation of Americans with the Kurdish people’s protection Units (YPG), operating in Syria. Ankara considers the YPG to terrorist organizations, considering them a branch of the outlawed Turkey Kurdistan workers ‘ party.

Relations between Turkey and the United States deteriorated rapidly after the operation “the Source of peace”, designed to establish a security zone at the southern Turkish border, while discarding from the Kurdish militia.

Although apparently the President trump did not protest against these actions and even invited President Erdogan to the United States 13 November, however, the lower house of Congress overwhelmingly voted for sanctions on top-ranking Turkish officials adopting a decision on starting operations against the Kurds. In addition, imposed a ban on the sale of Turkey of arms that could be used in Syria.

Another, perhaps more painful for Turkey the decision of the Congress was almost unanimous support for the initiative on the recognition of the genocide “the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the early twentieth century.” Various projects with the mention of the Armenian genocide in different years have already been tabled in the Congress, but there tried not to spoil relations with Turkey, which saw important strategic partner of the US in the middle East and NATO.

This lasted for decades, but now there was a serious fracture. Moreover, if sanctions on the Syrian operation will be stopped, the decision on the “Armenian genocide” the patch is no longer subject to. Us Ambassador David Satterfield was already called in this regard, the Turkish foreign Ministry, where he heard though diplomatically couched, but, nevertheless, is not a flattering assessment of Ankara of “hostile approach of Washington.”

A number of observers about this claim that, say, this is a clear illustration of the prevailing American establishment “political ferment”, as a reaction to the decision of Donald trump to withdraw American troops from the region and thus to leave its allies in the fight against banned terrorist formation DAYS, the Kurds, with the Turkish armed forces.

However for anybody not a secret the fact that no one anywhere in the region of American troops does not display. Moreover, they retained control of the most tasty morsel of the “Syrian cake”, heavily saturated with dollars and oil. And the damage is the “Kurdish allies,” by and large, is only slightly reduced is-controlled territory.

Perhaps now no one doubts that U.S.-Turkish relations are corrupted in an unprecedented manner.

Today, experts mostly agree that now, speaking of “friends,” the Turkish President in most cases is not the US and Russia, Iran and China. However, in the BRICS, Turkey is unlikely to enter in the near future due to the fact that it is a bit of a different format.

But to join the Shanghai cooperation organization a couple of years, Turkey can quite. Turkey is now actively developing relations with all relevant Asian countries such as India and China, and with ASEAN countries, but close connection it has established with Russia.
