QUEBEC – as Quebec is grappling with the pandemic COVID-19, the government announced that it will allow universities to accommodate more students in medicine over the next several years.
Some 139 admissions will be thus made possible at the end of the next three years.
For the first year of the three-year plan, 901 students will be accepted in medicine, that is 71 more than in this year.
The following year, 915 people (+14) will be one of the faculties of quebec medicine. This quota will then be raised to 969 admissions (+54) during the third year.
“The context of the accelerated ageing of the population, doubled in that time of a pandemic, we demonstrate the importance of correcting this situation in order to maintain an adequate level of services “, stated the minister of Health, Danielle McCann, by way of a press release on Friday.
Reached by QMI Agency, the office of the minister McCann was not able to say Friday how will distributed these 139 new parking spaces between the different universities.
Quebec has indicated, however, that this number of entries has been determined taking into account the training capacity of the faculties of medicine, the reorganization of the network and projects of branch campuses.
The increase and the ageing foreseeable in the population have also been taken into account in this decision, has affirmed Quebec.
Several agencies have been consulted, including the Collège des médecins du Québec, the representatives of the faculties of medicine in Québec, the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec and the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec, among others.
“An increase in the medical workforce needed for the next few years, it is now that we must act, and we are committed to forming an increased number of resources in this direction”, explained the minister of Education, Jean-François Roberge, always by way of a press release.
In addition, up to 62 students from outside Quebec will have the opportunity to enroll in undergraduate programs in medicine, 2020-2021, noted Quebec.
