    By Cyril BONNEFOY, meteorologist

After an exceptionally mild period at the start of the week, the cold arrives from the north on Christmas Day. Some children will even have the joy of enjoying a few centimeters of snow between the Massif Central and the reliefs to the east. Like what the weather is sometimes well done!

    To remember

Temperature drop of 10 ° C compared to the start of the week!

Strong mistral and tramontane: up to 100 km / h

Snow from 300 meters above sea level

    Weather background

A powerful anticyclone at 1040 hPa swells over the Atlantic while a low is isolated near the Gulf of Genoa. In a dynamic north-north-west flow, showers concern the northern half, more particularly the regions north of the Seine with a risk of sleet or rolled snow. We find traces of the cold front of the Pyrenees in the Jura with still a lot of clouds and humidity in the form of snowfall at low altitude. Going towards the Mediterranean it is a sunny Christmas day but very windy with a strong mistral and a strong tramontane. Note, more unstable weather between Var and Alpes-Maritimes with a risk of rain shower or snow at low altitude. Find our technical bulletin daily video.

    Details by regions

From New Aquitaine to the Brittany, through the Pays de la Loire, the influence of the Atlantic high pressure begins to be felt with a rather sunny day and conducive to digestive strolls after the Christmas meal, in particular along the coast. The sky remains cloudier inland, especially from Périgord to the Pyrenees where even a few drops or flakes from 300 to 400 meters are possible.

The cold sets in and the maximums drop back slightly below normal with only 4 to 8 ° C. The north wind reinforces the feeling of cold in the afternoon.

From Normandie to the Hauts-de-France et en Ile-de-France, an unstable trolling sky takes place with some clearings but above all many sleet showers or even rolled snow. The north wind is maintained especially on the coasts of the Channel and the North Sea with gusts close to 60 to 70 km / h.

The cold becomes sharp with the sensitive wind and the maximums no longer exceed 4 to 7 ° C.

Of Center-Loire Valley at Great East, through the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, after the light snowfall of Christmas night at low altitude, showers set in but are sometimes interspersed with beautiful periods of calm with large clearings.

Temperatures are in free fall with no more than 2 to 4 ° C in the middle of the afternoon.

Of the’Occitanie to theAuvergne-Rhône-AlpesThe humidity is high in the morning with a very cloudy sky still spilling a few light snow showers to the plain. In the afternoon, the trolling sky brings back a few showers, rather reserved for reliefs. The sun is very present, on the other hand, in Languedoc-Roussillon but the tramontane is reinforced with gusts to more than 90 km / h on the coast.

The feeling is winter and it will be necessary to dress well the children who will be able to play in the snow from the first heights. The maximums are between 1 ° C in Saint-Etienne and 9 ° C in Nîmes.

Of PACA to the Corsica, the weather is a little more unstable despite the often dominant sun. It is in the afternoon that showers are possible from the Var to the Alpes Maritimes and on the Corsican Mountain with snow at low altitude. The Mistral will blow very hard in the evening with gusts of over 100 km / h in the lower Rhône valley.

Afternoon temperatures are dropping and below normal with 7 to 14 ° C.
