While many people appreciate the positive experiences in life more than the negative, scientists insist that negative situation, help the person find new meaning to my existence.
Professor, University of Minnesota Kathleen CSW argues that a positive experience often overshadows the fact that negative experiences are able to give a new direction to the development of human life. To such conclusion the expert came after the study, whose results were recently published in Current Opinion in Psychology.
“People want positive experiences and avoid negative ones. However, the attempt to live in a world without problems and difficulties leads away from reality and can actually lead to loss of sense of importance and life satisfaction” – says Professor CSW.
To determine whether a negative experience causes a search for the meaning of life, CSW and her colleagues examined interviews with people who have experienced traumatic events, such as family problems, job loss or serious illness. The researchers found that almost all of the respondents admitted that a negative experience caused them to wonder why a certain event happened to them, and prompted the beginning of a search for new goals in life.
“Our survey showed that although people don’t always appreciate negative events, but they effectively stimulate mental processes, helping to give your life new meaning,” concludes the study’s author.
