According to a new study by British researchers avoiding alcohol for one month can improve health and help fight high blood pressure. According to experts, even those who consume alcohol in recommended amounts (14 units per week), can observe noticeable changes in key health indicators such as blood pressure, liver health and the risk of cancer.
In the study, experts observed three groups of women – those who drank up to 14 units of alcohol a week (officially recommended limit), those who drank about 28 units of alcohol per week (three bottles of wine per week) and those who drank about 36 units of alcohol per week (four wine bottles). At the beginning and at the end of the experiment, doctors measured the women’s blood pressure, liver stiffness (a measure of liver damage) and level cytokines – inflammatory proteins that may be involved in the development of cancer.
After a month of abstinence from alcohol the results were striking even for those who observed the rule of drinking. Among women who drank up to 14 units of alcohol a week, the stiffness of liver and the levels of cytokines decreased on average by 14%, while systolic blood pressure was lower by 6 mm Hg.St. For women who drank up to 28 units of alcohol per week, the level of cytokines decreased by 36% and blood pressure decreased by 9 mm Hg. article the stiffness of the liver has not changed. Among women who abuse alcohol and drinking about 36 units of alcohol per week or more, the level of cytokines decreased by 40%, the stiffness of the liver decreased by 15% and blood pressure decreased, on average, 10 mm Hg.
