The Church is a place for the salvation of human souls, and not a testing ground for policy experimentation, generating new conflicts
The main political legacy of Poroshenko, of course, possible to consider the multiple conflicts that he left behind inside the country and in the international arena. Unresolved military conflict, social tension, ruined relations with Russia. Even with the leaders of EU, USA and IMF Poroshenko has managed to spoil relations, putting our country in the very inadequate light. But all this was not enough – and Peter in favor of his, fortunately a failure of the campaign staged in the country of another conflict – religious.
So DNC, which was announced as the gathering point of all Orthodox denominations of Ukraine, not only became such, but, on the contrary, made even greater discord in the already tense relations between the churches in Ukraine. If before the conflict there between “Kiev” and the Moscow Patriarchate, it is now three churches in the truest sense of the word conduct among themselves fight. In fact, Poroshenko has cut the “Kiev Patriarchate” in two and now the two parts of a single whole once clashed in battle for the parishes. Moreover, the conflict, as we know, spilled over and into the international arena. The issue of recognition or non-recognition of the PCU created tensions between the various metropolises of the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as between the EOC and the ROC. Between Constantinople and Moscow. In the future it could spread to Poland, Belarus, Montenegro, Latvia, and possibly to churches in other countries.
But of all this Peter Alekseevich was not enough, and despite his defeat, he continues to interfere in religious matters. New idee fixe of the former President seems to have become the ptsu Association with the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. It is no secret that in recent time, the PCU and priests of the UGCC from time to time even arrange joint worship, and the head of the UGCC Archbishop Svyatoslav Shevchuk was one of the first who supported the creation of ptsu. The idea of unification of the churches does not deny the Epiphany, which in may this year, admitted that between the churches there are already a number of joint projects and there is a constant search for common ground.
1 Sep Poroshenko with the delegation of the UGCC visited Rome, where he sought a meeting with Pope Francis. However, the meeting did not take place. As reported Страна.UA citing its own sources in religious circles, Poroshenko sought the Pope’s support in the project of the Association of Greek Catholics with ptsu. But such support is not found. But I have found such support, it seems that the Archbishop Svyatoslav, who in the same place in Rome in mid-September, met with Patriarch Bartholomew (during his visit to Rome) and discussed the same project. And, unlike Poroshenko, has found understanding at Constantinople. That is, although Bartholomew and vague, but expressed in the way that he is not against to patronize the establishment, in fact, a new Church which will unite Greek-Catholics and ptsu.
Probably, Bartholomew expects to be able to pull of the Greek Catholics under its jurisdiction, as happened with the DNC, which has become, essentially, a branch of the Church of Constantinople. And such hope, Bartholomew is probably related to the fact that in the UGCC, there is a certain dissatisfaction with the papal throne. Let me remind you that this summer, Archbishop Sviatoslav asked Rome to grant Ukraine of the Patriarchate, but was refused. And now Francis, even despite the patronage of Sviatoslav, did not want to meet with Poroshenko, promoting the idea of the new Association.
In this regard, in the environment of Ukrainian “patriots” already there are voices do not pay special attention to the position of foreign bishops. For example, this idea is moving in a recent article by political expert Svetlana Kushnir, which explicitly States that Ukraine, they say, should be, not paying any attention to anybody, to build a new Church: https://korrespondent.net/url.hnd?url=https%3a%2f%2fsite.ua%2fsvitlana.kushnir%2f23816-obyedinenie-ptsu-i-ugkts—eto-v-interesah-ukrainy%2f
It is worth saying that the idea this will be even more devastating than what has already came out with the ptsu. After all, if we imagine that the UGCC will go to the break with Rome, exchanged under the patronage of Bartholomew, this will ensure that Ukraine is not only a problem with the papal throne, but with a variety of political circles in Europe. If the opposite will happen, and the DNC, on the contrary, will turn into a Greek Catholic confession, it will lead to even more intense religious conflict in Ukraine. In fact, it turns out that Poroshenko and Epiphanius, destroying the Kyiv Patriarchate, will try and just pass the former parishes of the Greek Catholics. What the outcome of such a project is even hard to imagine. But not on a “largest Christian Church from 11 thousand parishes,” as dreams about it in his article Kushnir, the question is not. But the multiple conflicts in most of these parishes in this case, can be guaranteed.
In the same way over and a project to create generally independent, one of a kind Ukrainian Christian churches, not associated with any foreign churches. In this case, the internal conflict will add another full international isolation from the world of Christianity.
In fact, why is it necessary to Poroshenko, it is clear. In past elections, the greatest support he received it in the Greek Catholic regions of the country and somehow wants to develop this resource. Traditionally Peter I do not confuse any possible consequences of his actions. This is a proven style, fortunately, already the former President.
However, everything else, including the hierarchs of the PCU and of the Church, and supporting their actions to political experts it is worth remembering that the Church is primarily a place for the salvation of human souls, and is not a ground for endless political experiments that generate new conflicts.Alexey Kalinichenko
