Korean scientists conducted a study which revealed that women who had five or more children have an increased risk for development of Alzheimer’s disease.
In the study, researchers took part 3500 women living in South Korea and Greece. Researchers analyzed the health of women and asked them to pass a standard test of cognitive ability. It should be noted that the study involved women over the age of 60.
Testing showed that participants who had more than five children, on average, worse cope with the test than women with fewer children.
Recall that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia (dementia), which often occur in the elderly from 65 years. As a rule, the disease begins with subtle symptoms, but over time progresses.
Some of the most common symptoms: short-term memory loss, impaired speech and loss of skills for daily activities, for example, a person may forget how to turn on the TV or how to properly open a carton of milk.
The development of this disease is influenced by many factors, including hormonal background of a person. During pregnancy, women have it much berestavitsa, so the study authors decided to test whether the effect is on the further development of women.
During pregnancy occurs a hormonal instability. For example, during the first trimester, estrogen level is not increasing, and then it rises sharply for the rest of my pregnancy. After childbirth hormones are usually quickly come back to normal. But a large number of genera and frequent surges of hormones can further impact negatively on the health of the mother, — according to Korean scientists.
The researchers also found that women who have had one or two incomplete pregnancy (abortion or miscarriage), less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than in women who never were pregnant.
Based on previous studies, we assumed that the number of children will affect the development of Alzheimer’s. But the surprise for us was that incomplete pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of developing the disease, said the researchers.
This can be explained by the fact that in most cases abortion occurs in the first trimester, when estrogen levels are in an optimal quantity. But it remains to be investigated.
Scientists have noted that during pregnancy is not only hormonal changes but also the whole body changes the immune system, reduced physical activity. Also after having children, women (in most cases) forced to change their way of life.
The researchers explained that in the first years of a child’s life the mother may come under stress, which is caused by lack of sleep, unbalanced diet and so on. With each new child that stress will increase, which can not but affect women’s health.
